Frequently Asked Questions:

What does WBS stand for?

WBS stands for Women’s Bible Study.  However, it also reflects our philosophy remaining close to the word of scripture as we study  — What the Bible Says?

What is the mission & vision for WBS?

Our mission is to know God through the study of the Bible and to apply the biblical truths we learn to our daily lives.

Our vision is to be a community of women who grow in their relationship with God and share God’s love with each other and those around them.

Why do you get together?

We are an independent group of women who started meeting together in 2006. There is a lot that is different about us, but we all have one thing in common. We want to know what the Bible says. There is so much going on in the world, and we have a need to see what this ancient yet timeless book says. We look to it to inform our understanding of God, and give us insight into how we fit into His plan. We are growing in numbers and want to share this very good thing with you. We think that there are probably a lot of other women like us, and we want to get the word out. The perfect time to join us is just around the corner.

What are you studying this year?

Take a look at our Current Study page for what we are studying this year. You can also look to see what we have studied in the past under Past Sessions or Summer Study

When and where do you meet?

Our regular season session goes from mid-September through May. Our summer session starts May and generally runs through July. For both the summer and regular season sessions, we meet on Thursdays in the morning and again in the evening. Check out our Details page for more details. Both sessions meet at the First Presbyterian Church in River Forest, IL – a church which has graciously donated the space to meet. The church is on the southeast corner of Quick and Lathrop (see directions). (Thank you First Pres!)

Does it cost anything?

If you are new, please just come! Try it out for a few weeks before you decide. If you want to join us, registration is $40 for the regular season session to cover books and expenses.  If you have young, pre-school children or grandchildren who will join our Kingdom Kids program, there is additional $40 fee per FAMILY. Scholarships are available.

How does it work – what does a typical time together look like?

The topics we will study this year have been broken up into week-sized lessons. At the end of each weekly meeting, we get assigned the homework questions for the upcoming week. We go through the lesson that week at home and fill out the questions on our own as best we can. On Thursdays we meet together in small groups (the same group each week) and discuss our insights, our questions, our thoughts. After the small group time all the groups get together to listen to a lecture from a woman who has done some deep study on the passage and shares her insights. You never know who the woman may be. We always sing some songs of worship together too for the morning session. These songs will range from ageless hymns to music written recently. All the words are up on a screen so no one feels awkward or left out. That part usually lasts about ten or fifteen minutes.

Do you think I will fit in?

What we love about WBS is that we gather with a diverse group of women but we all want to know what the Bible says. We come from about 45 different local churches, and some of us come from no church at all. It’s great. There are women there who have never opened a Bible, and there are women who have studied it every day of their adult lives. There are a lot of women at every level in between.

What if it’s the middle of the season?

It doesn’t matter, come anytime! We will provide you with all the season’s lessons so you can catch up if you’d like.  Check out our schedule.
